The string skipping involved here requires the use of hybrid picking,
or as John favours, the thumb on the low E. Practice the rolling
motionslowly at first between the thumb and middle finger, until
you're comfortable with maintaining a constant semiquaver rhythm.

There is a lot of legato movement between first and third fingers.
Use alternate picking with palm muting a la Zakk Wylde. These
pentatonic shapes are very quick, so you might like to try using
pull offs instead. Once you've hammered the first finger on,
keep it down for the note on the G string. Again, John uses fingers
here, i.e. thumb on the D string and middle finger on the G string.

The banjo roll at the start takes time to master, especially
timing wise.Spend time on the finger picking part to home in on the
technique of using the thumb, middle and index fingers. Try to use
a little palm muting too, otherwise the distortion will create note
bleed between open strings.After the first note bends the hammer-ons
are quick but they're more in the traditional rock style of players
like Slash etc. The whole pentatonic lick can be played with fingers
three and two, but concentrate on not pulling-off into the adjacent
open strings.
